Dearest Irene!

Almost 7 years ago I had the privilege to meet you. Not for a great occasion, but I would not for anything miss you having been part of my life!

Thank you for walking this incredible path with me; guiding me with your immense knowledge, sharing my deepest fears, joining me for happiness.

Irene, you are my hero. I have the utmost respect for what not only you have done for me, but for the entire cancer community. I am forever grateful.

So, with this, I am closing this chapter in my life and I am excited to go home to Germany.

I will miss our chats and laughter and your utter care you always extended to me.

You have a very special place in my heart. Look after yourself and maybe our paths will cross again. But not in oncology.

With love and gratitude

To my very kind and patient Oncologists

Firstly, it was worth my fight with the medical aid to come to this practice. You have all seen me through my wobbles and many questions wherever you have been, whether it was an actual appointment, behind your reception desk or even on the phone within your own home.

Ronelle, my very special thanks for your insights and understanding throughout this long journey. From the first visit all that time ago in late February to my final treatment on 23 August, you have been there for me and, as a result, I feel I have done very well, all things considered.

Although there will obviously be follow-up appointments to see how I am doing, these thanks must be conveyed to you all now.

With fondest regards

My name is Lolly (Loraine) Leonard. Soon after my 70th birthday in 2019, I was diagnosed with breast cancer.

I was fortunate that my GP sent me to Vincent Palotti to Anne Gudgeon’s practice to be tested and subsequently treated. Ronelle de Villiers was who I saw originally and since then have dealt with Ronelle and Anne.

At all times I was made to feel cared for.

From the first day I arrived, I was amazed by the individuals and team that I was sent to. In fact, on more than one occasion I asked if these people here in this practice were handpicked as they seemed firstly to explain everything so well and were more than sympathetic to my plight. They all seem to be born to work in oncology. It’s really scary to be told out of the blue that you have cancer.

They even worked my first lot of chemo around a trip I had booked before being diagnosed, a trip I had saved for and was to be my 70th birthday present to myself. To go to Switzerland and see Roger Federer my hero play in his home town tournament.

On the 26th December - after having almost completed my chemotherapy - I fell and broke my femur.

One of the practice’s staff Sharon, who always goes that extra mile, has been more than helpful all along with bills, etc., liaised with my daughter in UK to get me admission to Robin Trust. She is an absolute gem.

I am finished radiation and am busy with my last 7 Herceptin injections. I am now independent again.

I would recommend this practice unreservedly. A lovely bunch of skilled and kind people.

Dear Dr de Villiers,

I can’t believe how time has flown. It feels like yesterday that I started on this journey!

Thank you for your endless patience and kindness over the last 6 months.

It has been an emotional rollercoaster and you have guided and supported me every step of the way.

Your words about making a difference resonated with me.

You have certainly made a difference in my life.

Thank you
